Quartier Latin / Quai du Pont Neuf / Les Vedettes du Pont Neuf

Image
Corentin lead a group of stalwarts up to Montmartre, the big hill in Paris with the Sacré-Cœur Basicilla. Jane and I stayed with a smaller group that wandered through the Latin Quarter – no hills. Corentin brought pizzas and we dined on the quai near the Pont Neuf. It was a great time to relax and recharge before our final adventure – the dusk scenic boat ride on the Seine River through the heart of Paris. It was a wonderful way to end our day! In front of Shakespeare and Company The crêpes queens! Happy Harmon Curious Kenneth La belle Évie Eli discusses a philosophical point (as always) while Évie takes him VERY seriously. I believe that this is called a sorority pose - in front of the Sorbonne. A rare phot of Monsieur Michel in front of the statue of Saint Michel at the  beginning of Boulevarde Saint Michel. On the Pont Neuf I made this picture for Charlie. On the quai du Pont Neuf Real Paris dust on my shoes. Real weird Lucy feet. A typical Charlie tear, complete with weird Lucy.

Le Louvre / Notre Dame

Then it was on to the Louvre – the largest art museum in the world! Again, this is a very crowded place. So, the students went in groups of three throughout the museum. I tried as well as I could to show the students the Venus de Milo, the Winged Victory, the Mona Lisa, Liberty Leading the People and the Raft of the Medeuse, as well as Italian Renaissance painting. We’re not actually permitted to stop in front of works with large groups and talk about them. You have to be a registered Louvre guide to do that. There were so many people and we were dispersed, so I don’t have photos of the students in the Louvre, just outside while we waited to gather together. From the Louvre, we walked past the Bookinists on the Left Bank and ended up in front of the Notre Dame Cathedral. Even though she is damaged and under reconstruction, we felt that it was important for our students to have the experience. I haven’t mentioned the temperature in Paris. When we left Brest at 7AM Saturday, it was

Arc de Triomphe

Next was a Métro trip to the top of the Champs-Élysées and the Arc de Triomphe, Napoleon’s triumphal arch. We then wandered down the wide boulevard until it was lunch time. Some of our group had McDonald’s on the Champs-Élysées. I just couldn’t bring myself to do it – such a sacrilege. Waiting for the Métro. The arch is really big! Who would have figured these two together? Jaspar is everywhere! The Corentin thing again!

La Tour Eiffel

When we described our agenda for Sunday in Paris to the host families, the response was pretty much universal – “You Americans try to do too much!” But realistically, we had one day to show as much of Paris to the students as we could. We started Sunday morning with an ascent to the second floor of the Eiffel Tower – using the stairs! (Elevator tickets to the tower sell our six months in advance now that crowds are more limited.) I’m proud to say that all of us made it! (Even this old man!) The views are extraordinary. This is a memory that all of us will keep forever. You can see the Iron Lady from virtually everywhere in Paris. Waiting in line, you are very close. With this group, the line was fun! And not all that long. More fun! Dominique and his fish. It's a Corentin thing. Gang de filles Came, saw, conquered. Perfect camera smiles. Besties. They did it! Paris view. The famous glass floor. We were there!
